December 2008

I have recently been reading Down The Garden Path, by Beverly Nichols.  This classic book on gardening has a section in which the author describes his favorite winter-blooming plants.   He mentions several that most of us are familiar with such as Erica, Hellebore, Forsythia and Crocus.

But one plant stood out to me, more for its fragrance than anything else, and I’d like to recommend it to you; it is Chimonanthus fragrans or Wintersweet. It can bloom from December through April and gives off a spicy lemon aroma. In colder areas it will like some shelter so planting it in a well-draining container and keeping it close to the house is not a bad idea.  It has glossy green foliage the rest of the year and it is great to train against a warm exterior wall. I’m looking forward to trying it out. If you do too, let me know how you like it.
